In ye olden days, AP or UPI newswire teletypes would spit out a constant stream of paper in newsrooms. Editors or reporters would have to periodically use rulers to tear apart the continuous spool of paper into individual stories. These stories would be sorted into baskets or hooks on the wall. This was called "stripping the wire". In the same way, this blog will attempt to sort through relevant content on the internet to identify and "strip out" items of interest for my students.

Of course looks matter in on television, even if we say and hope they don't and we all will be objective by the personal skills of the person, there is still a personality quality and look that matters on television. I agree with the article, looks matter too much in television. Although the industry is male dominated, and like in the lecture from Lindsdey Mastis and Kathy said, they still get phone calls about their hair and the way they look. While skills of journalism and not looks shouldn't matter, they do. It's unfortunate, but we still can try to change that by being involved and fighting for change.
i think Deborah made some valid points towards the end of her agrument. however i do not agree with her flat out bashing the women she feels are incompetent of being news anchors, it really clouds her statements. its a competitive market, and not everyone's cut out for it. thats the cold hard truth, and sometimes, the truth hurts.
That's a shame. People and their looks obviously matter on tv...that's why it's tv. But a JOB in tv should be highly based on qualifications and work standards, not purely on looks. Some of us can attest that neither Dan Rather or Barbara Walters are considered by society as 'hot'. But let's face, their good at what they do which is bringing us quality information. If you want a Barbie, turn to MTV or something like that. Let's keep broadcast news anchors as professional as possible.
I would write whats on my mind on this article, but it is the exact same as Rhonda's comment, but it is true lets keep this profession as professional as possible and not to forget to be presentable but not too over fashionable.
