In ye olden days, AP or UPI newswire teletypes would spit out a constant stream of paper in newsrooms. Editors or reporters would have to periodically use rulers to tear apart the continuous spool of paper into individual stories. These stories would be sorted into baskets or hooks on the wall. This was called "stripping the wire". In the same way, this blog will attempt to sort through relevant content on the internet to identify and "strip out" items of interest for my students.

This article provided some good advice and excellent motivation for becoming involved and doing what you can to improve your skills. In many of my classes, we are learning web journalism, and I'm taking an online advertising class as one of my journalism electives. Expanding your skill set is very important in this business now because of changing technology and convergence of jobs. Many have the skills to be a producer, reporter or director. Knowledge is power. The more of a "Renaissance Person" you are, the more you will succeed because you will understand the business more.
it is very important to be versatile in your field, you maay never know what may come your way, and to be able to touch on different parts and excel are great.
