In ye olden days, AP or UPI newswire teletypes would spit out a constant stream of paper in newsrooms. Editors or reporters would have to periodically use rulers to tear apart the continuous spool of paper into individual stories. These stories would be sorted into baskets or hooks on the wall. This was called "stripping the wire". In the same way, this blog will attempt to sort through relevant content on the internet to identify and "strip out" items of interest for my students.

People are the story. The lives of others has always facinated me. Before I returned to school to study radio/television I worked at a youth organization counseling youth in gangs, on parole/probation, then I spent a year and a half provide therapy to youth and families in a detention center. I was always amazed at the lives and struggles of others and helping them find a better life. We as journalists need to get out there and talk to the people because everyone has a story.
I agree 100 percent that people area the story. There would be no news without people. They are the driving force behind any news source out there. Seeing the story of Scoop is great. He has been able to get out there and cover tons of things. My sister produces for NBC, so she doesn't really get the chance to go out and actually be with people in order to get the news. Sometimes things get thrown out to anyone in her newsroom, and she is the first to jump on it. When Rudy Guiliani was still in the Republican race, she was able to go to a favorite restaurant of hers and ask Guiliani questions with a ton of other reporters. She thought it was a blast being out there with everyone else.
I agree that people are the story. How boring would it be if all stories were done in the newsroom? Journalist need to get out and interact with people and I'm sure it would make for a much better story.

People make up the news. I used to think that you had to live in a big city to get big scoops and stories. Talking to people, listening to their thoughts and letting their voices and lives be heard, is important as a journalist. Everyone has something that could make a story, you just have to find it.
I loved Scoop's comment about how the smoke from the fire isn't the story, but that the people are the story. Too often, we get distracted from this truth. But the people do make the story.

In general the news is people oriented. It's purpose is to report how events affect people's lives, and it's also supposed to report the events in extraordinary people's lives of which could inspire others.
There would be no news if it weren't for the people. That's a given. Going out there and being involved is the way to go.
