In ye olden days, AP or UPI newswire teletypes would spit out a constant stream of paper in newsrooms. Editors or reporters would have to periodically use rulers to tear apart the continuous spool of paper into individual stories. These stories would be sorted into baskets or hooks on the wall. This was called "stripping the wire". In the same way, this blog will attempt to sort through relevant content on the internet to identify and "strip out" items of interest for my students.

I have long heard about the downward spiral of newspapers and television. The Internet has provided a new source of information and communication, which is a good thing. However, I think the content of news has largely shifted to entertainment-advertising driven, rather than issues that can impact us.
i agree. i think i could tell people more about entertainers and famous people then world issues. which is sad.
I agree with Jill and SalukiCurt about entertainement driven news. I can't stand hearing about Brittany Spears and the revolving rehab doors that celebs are entering. I consider myself a little old school. I love my newspaper. I read it daily(Chicago Sun-Times. The article was right that a lot of the news programs on are during the hours that people are at work, school, or otherwise busy. However, wth Tivo and HDR (or whatever it's called) people can record their news programs. You cna do your daily things around the house and have the news on in the background. I enjoy reading and watching, then surfing the net.
People want to know what celebrities are doing because it's exciting and different from our lives and news stations know that by having celebrity and entertainment-style stories, more people, especially the younger audience are more inclined to watch the news.
I think it's funny how everyone knows that BSpears never wears undergarmets rather than what's actually important in this crazy world. Don't get me wrong, I'm very fasinated with entertainment news, but come on it's kind of sad.
