In ye olden days, AP or UPI newswire teletypes would spit out a constant stream of paper in newsrooms. Editors or reporters would have to periodically use rulers to tear apart the continuous spool of paper into individual stories. These stories would be sorted into baskets or hooks on the wall. This was called "stripping the wire". In the same way, this blog will attempt to sort through relevant content on the internet to identify and "strip out" items of interest for my students.

I hate the over abundance of junk/spam e-mails and I am just afraid that this campaigning sceme will lead to more b.s. text messages in the future. I understand the times are changing and it appears to be an effective means of getting the word out. Newsrooms may want to explore the possibilities with subscribing to different applications and text options. It may lead to getting the story first and many other possibilities....

Personally, that would annoy me, receiving text messages that don't necessarily interest me. I have a feature on my phone right now where I can receive e-mail messages instantly, and it get's on my last nerve when it ends up being spam, or, someone who is trying to trick me in to giving them my money.
In this case, using it in the newsroom- sounds like a good idea. Perhaps if there was a mobile used strictly for news room purposes where all kinds of new information got sent to it, and someone checked it frequently for updates- that would be fine. But receiving it on my personal mobile... i don't think so. Atleast not just yet.
