In ye olden days, AP or UPI newswire teletypes would spit out a constant stream of paper in newsrooms. Editors or reporters would have to periodically use rulers to tear apart the continuous spool of paper into individual stories. These stories would be sorted into baskets or hooks on the wall. This was called "stripping the wire". In the same way, this blog will attempt to sort through relevant content on the internet to identify and "strip out" items of interest for my students.

I was not surprised by this article. When I first went to college, I was in a history class and the professor asked us to name 10 battle fought during the Civil War and when it started and when it was over. I was only 1 of two who could do it. I'm surprised that my generation knows very little about history or politics. Admittedly I don't know certain things either, but at least I take an interest and read about every topic, rather than just entertainment. There are people who don't even know who the Beatles are and what Hiroshima was. That is sad. I think the professor is right, but a little too harsh at times. Instead of making his students feel stupid, maybe he should teach them instead of insulting them.
I agree people don't really pay any attention to politics or know anything about the Iraq war. People in my generation are more concerned on when Britney Spears is getting out of rehab and How many DUI'S Paris Hilton has had. I think everyone in this field should be required to take history course along with political science course.

i wish that more detail was paid to history when i was n grade school and highschool. i feel like we jumped around lot, and i came out of highschool with many gaps in the history of our country. i represent one of the many who would pay attention to politics and history in the news. i find it intriguing. dr. bean gave the best assignment ever in my college history class: research billy joel song "we didnt start the fire" now thats history!

We were talking about the lack of political knowledge in the U.S. in my German class. They take pride in knowing EVERTHING about their countrie's history even though it wasn't all that great. There is a giant lack of knowledge here. It's pretty embarassing.
