Jena Six Debate Continues

I'm just not sure what to make of this story written by the Assistant Editor of the Jena Times. Is this guy just trying to salvage the reputation of his community? Or have we been misled? At some point we all need to take a closer look at how this story was covered...right or wrong.

I also covered the Jena 6 from near the very beginning, though not as thoroughly as The Jena Times. Craig Franklin has hit the nail on the head.

The media coverage is a sad tale of the press negelecting it's responsibility to dig for the truth and following blindly when the race pimps speak.

It's a lesson we all need to learn from.

Until a couple months ago, I had never even heard of the Jena Six case, and when it was presented to me by several media outlets, it was definitely a race issue and I could see that. Images of the town, people and racism were blatantly shown. I'm not sure what to believe. The reporter seems committed to show his town in a favorable light, but the coverage shows the opposite. When a story like this is shown, it's the responsibility of journalists and researchers to find the truth, no matter what the cost.

When I first heard of this story I definitely took what I heard as truth. Sometimes you don't realize that stories can be twisted around to see a different side. My view was only through one source: the media and I believed everything I heard. This story just makes me wonder what other stories have been reported wrong, or just to have a good story. I guess the way the media displayed the story it made for good headlines, but they mislead many people in believing what they wanted. I think the truth is more important than gossip. Reporters need to care about the stories instead of only looking for the best headlines.

I think this dude is one of those people that just HAVE to have their side of the story heard. I understand the tension of the situation, but in any case that nooses are hung from a tree, there's only one thing to think. Whether these kids claim they had knowledge of connotations behind nooses or not, they still deserved punishment. I'm sick of people taking cop-outs.

the nooses were enough to make me sick, and I'm tired of excuses so for me I think this guy loves to hear himself talk and honeslty I am done with this discriminating public display that caused so much up roar!

The Jena Six case, in my opinion, is a blessing to have occured. I'm glad that the public can see, in this extreme way, that racism is alive and well and that we seriously need to reexamine our society. Since we're living in the post civil rights era, some think that racism is no more, and the legendary civil rights leaders have done the job and have defeated "the beast". The sad fact is that racism is just as ravaging and abrasive as ever before; it's just that "the beast" is lurking in the shadows.
